What is Infant Eczema?
Before we dive into the best treatment for infant eczema, it’s essential to understand what infant eczema is. Doctors often refer to two conditions when discussing infant eczema, which typically appears between the ages of 2 and 4 months.
Atopic Dermatitis
Atopic dermatitis is a chronic disorder, often inherited, that affects babies more frequently when there is a family history of allergies, eczema, or asthma. It manifests as dry skin that can flare up, becoming red, sore, and itchy. It is most frequently found on the face and in body creases such as the neck, back of the knees, inside of the elbows, and wrists. In Singapore, this is one of the most common skin conditions affecting children, with one in twenty Singaporean kids suffering from atopic eczema.
Contact Dermatitis
Contact dermatitis is a skin rash that appears after contact with an irritant. It can be painful, red, fluid-filled, and ulcerated. If the irritant is removed, the rash usually goes away.
Different Eczema Symptoms for Infants, Babies, and Toddlers
Eczema may appear as a painful, itchy rash on a baby’s face, torso, or body, typically not in the diaper area. For children with lighter pigmented skin, eczema typically appears pink or red. In contrast, for children with darker pigmented skin, eczema often has a reddish-brown, purple, or greyish appearance, which can make it more challenging to identify without redness and inflammation. However, it’s crucial to get treatment, as children of color are more likely to have lightened or darkened skin areas where eczema occurred.
Eczema in infants and toddlers appears and reacts differently compared to older kids. Knowing what to look for as your infant or toddler grows is vital because the location and appearance of eczema change as they do.
Infants (First 6 Months)
Typically, eczema affects the face, cheeks, chin, forehead, and scalp. Although it can spread to other body parts, it rarely affects the diaper area, as wetness safeguards the skin. At this stage, the skin tends to look redder and more “weepy.”
Babies (6-12 Months)
As your baby begins to crawl, eczema frequently develops on their elbows and knees, which are easy to scratch or rub. If the eczema rash becomes infected, the skin may develop a yellow crust or extremely tiny “pus bumps.”
Toddlers (2-5 Years)
Your toddler’s elbows, knees, wrists, hands, and ankles may develop eczema. You might still see it on their face and eyelids. The skin appears thicker with deeper lines, called “lichenification.”
Treatment for Infant Eczema
While there is no known cure for baby eczema, you might try a few home treatments to manage it:
- Use lukewarm water rather than a hot bath, and avoid excessive rubbing of the baby’s skin, especially with rough loofahs, washcloths, or towels.
- Regularly apply fragrance- and dye-free ointments, creams, and lotions to your baby’s skin, especially after bathtime.
- Dress your infant in soft cotton clothing that “breathes.”
- Keep your baby’s fingernails short to avoid scratching, which can harm the skin and cause severe inflammation and infection.
- Keep irritants and allergens out of the house as much as possible.
- Use cool compresses (a wet, cool washcloth) to keep your baby cool and prevent excessive perspiration, especially on inflamed areas.
- Consider covering your baby’s hands with mittens if you need to leave them alone for a short time, such as when you need to use the restroom.
If these home treatments do not improve your infant’s eczema, consider asking your pediatrician about stronger options. Your doctor may recommend topical corticosteroids, antihistamines, topical calcineurin inhibitors, or topical steroid cream. However, topical steroids that penetrate the skin and enter the bloodstream may have an adverse effect on a child’s growth if long-term therapy with strong steroids is required. It is crucial to monitor the child’s development. Consulting with a pediatrician is strongly advised to understand your infant’s condition, but it might not be the best treatment for infant eczema.
Alternative Treatment: Hydrogen Water
According to recent scientific investigations, drinking hydrogen-infused water has demonstrated beneficial effects on atopic dermatitis. These are the two research articles:
Research Article 1
Research Article 2
Hydrogen, the smallest molecule known, can diffuse into each human organ, tissue, cell, and intracellular structure, including the mitochondria and nucleus, through the skin, mucous membranes, bones, and blood-brain barrier. Hydrogen acts as an antioxidant by specifically removing harmful free radicals, also known as oxidative stress. Since hydrogen water has no flavor or aroma, it is ideal for children and is considered to be the best treatment for infant eczema. It has been demonstrated to be extremely safe for children to consume regularly and has no known negative effects. You can drink it all day long if you want to.
Which Hydrogen Water to Drink?
In actuality, no attempts had been made to package and distribute hydrogenated or hydrogen-infused water until now. With more than 300 million units sold since 2007, Izumio is a brand you can trust. The Japanese company uses cutting-edge membrane dissolution technology to infuse 3.3ppm of hydrogen into water, the highest amount of hydrogen content found in the industry. As Japanese companies are particular about the quality of their products, a four-layer aluminum pouch with strong shielding protection is used to package IZUMIO. Testing has been done to ensure that the aluminum pouch’s cap won’t leak even when IZUMIO packets are placed upside down in cartons and that the product’s high hydrogen dissolution ratio can be preserved over extended storage.
Testimonial of Izumio for Infant Eczema
Sharing good news means sharing happiness. Here is one of the many testimonials that show hydrogen-infused water is the best treatment for infant eczema.
This cute little girl is called Boey, and her mother shared this on Facebook with the intention of helping more children find relief from their suffering and helping worried parents smile again. This is what she shared:
“My heart still aches when recalling that Boey had severe eczema until she was 8 months old. After sharing this story with many people, I realized that many kids suffer from eczema issues. Once again, I want to let all new parents know that eczema issues can be solved. The story goes like this: On the 8th day after Boey was born, she developed many little pimples on her face, wrist, ankle, and everywhere on her body that would sweat. Plus, she kept crying non-stop. I tried many lotions, creams, and visited many doctors, but nothing could really stop the eczema from recurring. Until April 4th, 2016, I learned about the benefits of Super Lutein and Izumio. In the last week of April 2016, I started giving Boey Izumio. After one week of drinking Izumio, the eczema subsided. When Boey was 1 year old, I started giving her Super Lutein, from one capsule per day to three capsules per day. My husband and I really feel that Izumio is the best treatment for eczema and are very happy that Boey has not suffered from eczema since then.”
